The Only Singapore Itinerary You Need as a First Timer
Singapore has a reputation problem. Ask most people who haven't been and they'll tell you it's too expensive, too sterile, or too small to justify a full trip. This 5D4N itinerary breaks down exactly where to go, what to book, and how to make every day count. Ganito lang 'yan!
Singapore has a reputation problem. Ask most people who haven't been and they'll tell you it's too expensive, too sterile, or too small to justify a full trip. Ask anyone who's actually been and they'll tell you to go back.
The truth is Singapore is one of the most efficiently enjoyable cities in Southeast Asia โ a place where a SGD10 hawker meal hits harder than a SGD100 restaurant in most other countries, where the MRT gets you anywhere in under 30 minutes, and where world-class attractions are genuinely worth every SGD when you book them right.
This 5-day, 4-night Singapore itinerary is built around that reality โ balancing the big experiences with the free ones, the iconic sights with the neighborhood gems. Ganito lang 'yan! ๐
Day 1: Arrival and First Impressions โ๏ธ
A morning flight into Singapore is the right call. Getting in early gives you actual usable hours on Day 1 instead of checking in and calling it a night.
๐จ Where to Stay
When choosing your hotel, prioritize proximity to an MRT station โ Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit network is excellent and covers virtually every spot on this itinerary. Bus stops are also plentiful near most hotels, giving you even more flexibility for getting around.
๐ก Pro Tip: I personally enjoyed the Bencoolen area, instead of Orchard Road. It has more stalls and restaurants too! Use promo code HEYIANCHOTEL for up to 10% off your booking for Agoda hotels!
๐ธ Merlion Park
After check-in, head straight to Merlion Park โ the iconic waterfront spot that's essentially Singapore's most recognizable landmark. The half-lion, half-fish statue is the classic photo stop, but the real draw is the view: from here you get a direct sightline to Marina Bay and the unmistakable triple towers of Marina Bay Sands. It's one of the best free photo spots in the city.
๐ฝ๏ธ Lau Pa Sat
From Merlion Park, walk over to Lau Pa Sat for dinner. This historic Victorian cast-iron hawker center is one of Singapore's most famous food halls โ enormous variety, great quality, and genuinely affordable. A full meal with a drink can run as low as SGD 10. It's the perfect introduction to Singapore's hawker culture, which is honestly one of the best reasons to visit this city.
Day 2: Sentosa Day โจ
Most Sentosa attractions don't open until mid-morning, so use the early hours wisely before heading over.
โ Free Sky Garden (Morning)
Start the day at a free rooftop sky garden with a stunning view of Marina Bay. Entry is free but requires a pre-booked slot โ sort this out before your trip so you don't miss it. It's one of those hidden gems that most first-timers skip, which means fewer crowds and a better experience for you.
โ Sentosa Island (Afternoon)
Once the attractions open, make your way to Sentosa Island. Depending on your group and interests, the options include:
- Singapore Oceanarium โ One of the largest aquariums in Southeast Asia, with an impressive range of marine life.
- Universal Studios Singapore โ Rides, shows, and themed zones for a full theme park day.
- Harry Potter: Visions of Magic โ The newest major attraction on the island, immersive and built for fans and non-fans alike. I suuuuuper enjoyed this!
๐ค Tipid Tip: All three are available on Klook โ use promo code HEYIANCKLOOK for up to 5% off (new users only).
Day 3: Gardens by the Bay ๐ธ
Day 3 is for one of Singapore's most spectacular modern attractions โ and it packs more into a single area than most itineraries give it credit for.
โ Cloud Forest and Flower Dome
Start inside the cooled conservatories. The Cloud Forest now houses Jurassic World: The Experience โ a fully immersive walk-through attraction that's worth going early to avoid peak crowds (check official sites on when this collab ends). Pair it with the Flower Dome, the world's largest glass greenhouse, filled with rotating seasonal displays from different climate zones around the world. You can purchase a Gardens by the Bay combo ticket to save on your bookings.
โ Supertree Grove
After the domes, step outside and explore the Supertree Grove โ the towering vertical gardens that have become the defining image of Gardens by the Bay. The best view of the grove with Marina Bay Sands in the background is from ground level looking up, or from the elevated walkway between the trees.
If the main grove area is crowded, the nearby Silver Garden offers a quieter alternative with a similarly excellent Marina Bay Sands backdrop.
โ The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands
From Gardens by the Bay, the walk to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands takes just a few minutes. If you're in the mood for shopping โ or just want to experience one of the most architecturally dramatic malls in the world โ this is your stop.
โ Free Spectra Light Show (Evening)
Stay into the evening for the free nightly light show called Spectra at Gardens by the Bay. The Supertree Grove lights up with a synchronized music and light display that runs twice nightly. It's completely free and a genuinely impressive way to close out the day.
Day 4: Arab Street and Chinatown ๐ฎ
Day 4 gets into Singapore's most characterful neighborhoods โ two of the best in the city for food, culture, and photography.
โ Arab Street and Sultan Mosque
Start your morning in Arab Street, one of Singapore's most photogenic districts. The golden domes of Sultan Mosquemake for an unmissable backdrop, and the surrounding Kampong Glam area is full of boutique shops, Middle Eastern cafรฉs, and street art worth wandering through.
โ Albert Centre Market
While you're in the area, Albert Centre Market and Food Centre is just a short walk away โ a bustling hawker center directly opposite Bugis Street. A great spot for a local lunch before you continue exploring.
โ Chinatown
Head to Chinatown in the afternoon. This is your best stop for affordable pasalubong and souvenirs โ everything from dried goods and snacks to traditional trinkets and local specialty products, at prices that won't hurt your travel budget. Take your time browsing the covered market streets.
โ Maxwell Food Centre
Right across from Chinatown is Maxwell Food Centre, one of Singapore's most beloved hawker centers and a great choice for dinner. The Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice stall here has legendary status โ get there early as it tends to sell out.
Day 5: Esplanade and Last-Minute Shopping ๐๏ธ
Your final day is flexible by design.
โ Esplanade Roof Terrace
If you want one more free viewpoint before you fly, head to the Esplanade Roof Terrace. Perched above the iconic durian-shaped Esplanade performing arts center, it offers a clean, elevated view of Marina Bay that's different from any other spot on the itinerary โ and it's completely free.
โ Last-Minute Shopping
Use whatever time remains for any last-minute shopping or errands before heading to the airport. Singapore's retail options are everywhere, so you won't have trouble filling the final few hours.
๐ก Pro Tip: A free all-in-one travel planner โ covering budget templates, itinerary planning, and a Singapore cheatsheet โ is available to download at no cost. Download it here before your trip and use it to map out your spending and schedule in one place.
Getting Around Singapore: Transport Tips
- EZ-Link Card (optional) โ Pick up a reloadable EZ-Link card at any MRT station on arrival. It works on the MRT, buses, and some taxis. Alternatively, you can simply use your Visa/Mastercard debit or credit cards to pay!
- MRT โ Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit is fast, air-conditioned, and covers all the major areas on this itinerary. It's by far the most efficient way to move around the city.
- Buses โ I personally prefer riding the bus since they're efficient, and usually requires less walking (unlike the MRT where you need to walk within stations going to the platforms).
- Walking โ The city center is more walkable than most people expect. Several stops on this itinerary โ Merlion Park to Lau Pa Sat, Gardens by the Bay to Marina Bay Sands โ are comfortable walks of 10โ20 minutes.

Final Thoughts
The city is clean, safe, and surprisingly affordable when you eat where locals eat, use public transport, and take advantage of the genuinely excellent free attractions scattered throughout. This itinerary balances the big experiences with the everyday ones โ because the best memories from Singapore are usually made at a hawker stall, not a hotel lobby.
Hope this helps! More travels soon!
